What is Road Running? 5/1/2008

The emphasis of the Running Events Calendar is on the sport called "Road Running." Road Running events are referred to as "road races," which involve running on a road, such as a street, a highway, or a combination of streets and highways.

This is opposed to track running (running on a finished racetrack) or cross country running (running on trails). However, many established road races include segments that are on racetracks or on trails; the geography of the area may make it more convenient to include portions on dirt or rocky trails, and some road races end on a racetrack to make for an orderly finish.

Road races may also include segments that are on sidewalks, not technically a part of the street.

The length of a road race is up to the organizer. The most popular ones are 5 kilometers long (approximately 3.1 miles), 10 kilometers (approximately 6.2 miles), half-marathon (13.1 miles) and marathon ("full marathon" - 26.2 miles). Many road races permit non-runners to comingle with the runners; non-runners are participants who walk instead of run.
