Before You Run... 5/1/2008

Participating in a road race is a potentially hazardous activity. You should not run unless you are medically able to do so. Even walkers should consult with their physician before making the decision to participate.

You should also be properly trained to run a road race. You do not enter a 5k run for the very first time if your only physical activity is sedentary. You must warm up to it, taking a little at a time. For instance, you could take regular walks (around your neighboorhood or a shopping mall) increasing the lengths by a few feet each time until you can comfortably walk for 3 miles without stopping to rest. Then, you can run, at a slow pace, portions of the distance; say jog 100 feet, walk 200 feet, jog another 100 feet, walk, alternating running and walking. Of course, you gradually increase the length of the running portions as you are able.

How long does it take to work up to enter a 5k run for the very first time? It's all up to you, how much time you have to train, how much effort you want to put into it. You do NOT have to be able to run an entire 3 mile distance. It is permissible to alternate running and walking during a road race, and you SHOULD alternate if you feel too tired.
